Shin Splints (April 13, 2014)

Shin Splints

After a long winter indoors, many people are dusting off their running shoes and hitting the pavement. Many people feel running is great way to get back in shape, but don't realize how hard running can be on your body.  Running on sidewalks, roads and trails in Newfoundland can be hard on your feet, knees and all points in between.  All the force
that goes through these joints when running is 10 times that of your body
weight.

What are Shin splints? Shin splints known as Medial Tibial Stress Syndrome (MTSS)
are a result of inflammation along the tibia, where several muscles of your
lower leg attach. Shin splints develop as a result of improper footwear, poor
lower extremity mechanical and overtraining. The good news is that it is
preventable.

Buy a proper pair of running shoes
that suit your foot type. You should replace your shoes every 400-600 miles or
          every 6 months.

start with a reasonable running distance
and gradually increase the distance you run every few weeks.

Make sure you stretch your muscles
before and after you finish your run.

Exercise for shin splints

Exercise 1:
Sit on the floor with your knees straight. Loop a rope or towel around the
front of your foot and gently pull back. Move your foot up toward your shin
(dorsiflexion) and hold for 10 seconds. Then move your foot down toward the
floor (plantarflexion). Keep your legs flat on the floor; motion should only be
at your ankle joints. Start with 3 sets of 10 exercises; do this 3 times per
day.

Exercise 2:

Siton a bench or table with your knees bent and your legs hanging off the side.
Bend your foot up toward your shin (dorsiflexion) and hold for 10 seconds, then
lower your foot by pointing your toes back toward the floor (plantarflexion).
Start with 3 sets of 10 exercises; do this 3 times per day.

Exercise 3:

Begin by standing in place and rising up onto your toes with your heels off of the
floor. Try to hold the position for 10 seconds and slowly lower your heels back
to the floor. Start with 3 sets of 10 exercises and then increase to 3 sets of
30 exercises. Do this 3 times per day

Exercise 4:

Begin by standing in place and lifting the front of your foot off of the floor and
keeping your heels on the floor. Try to hold the position for 10 seconds and
then slowly lower the front of your foot back to the floor. Start with 3 sets
of 10 exercises and then increase to 3 sets of 30 exercises. Do this 3 times
per day.

Exercise 5:

Stand facing a wall, keep your knee straight and your heel on the floor and place the
front, bottom part of your foot against the wall. You will feel a stretch in
your calf muscles. Start with 3 sets of 10 exercises and then increase to 3
sets of 30 exercises. Do this 3 times per day.

Exercise 6:

Stand facing a wall with your body square to the wall. Outstretch your arms and hands
and lean against the wall. Keep one knee straight with your heel and foot
firmly on the floor and gently lean forward until you feel a pull in the back
of your leg (calf). When your knee is straight, this stretches the
gastrocnemius (superficial calf muscle). Start with 3 sets of 10 exercises and
then increase to 3 sets of 30 exercises. Do this 3 times per day.

Static vs Dynamic Stretches; Which is Better ? (February 5, 2012)

Within a few months, the streets and paths around St. John's will be crowded with runners training for the upcoming racing season.  Chances are, some of those runners will develop some sort of injury througout their training routine.  Previous research informed us that performing static stretches before we run will help to reduce the incidence of injuries.  Well it turns out that static stretching prior to running may infact reduce your running performance and increase the chance of an injury.   New research indicates that dynamic stretching is the type of stretching you should be performing prior to running.  Please connect to following link for more details and a simple dynamic stretching routine that you can perform prior to running.   http://runningtimes.com/Print.aspx?articleID=19229.    If you have any questions, please call Therapeutic Services at 753 3374 and one of our Physiotherapists would be happy to help you.  Happy Running Everyone !

Twas the week after Christmas (January 3, 2012)

Twas the Week after Christmas

Twas the week after Christmas, When all through the
town

Not a person left standing without gaining a pound

The Stocking are down and boxed up for the year

In hopes that the Visa bill don't bring us to tears

The Children were settled and back into school

With visions of summer time and a warm heated pool

And Liv in her slippers and Dan with high hopes

Had just got back from a Christmas on the slopes

When into the clinic there arose such a chatter

I rose from my desk to see what was the matter

Away to the Shelf I walked very fast

To find Dan in the Christmas chocolate stash

The Sun on the ice all over the place

Gave a thought of people slipping and needing us post
haste

When what to my eyes should I see?

But a sign at Tim Horton's "coffee for free"

With a little jump and pep in my step

I knew in a heartbeat it will be "The Best Year Yet"

More rapid than eagles in droves they came

With sprains, breaks, aches and pains

They were wearing their casts, bandages and braces

They all knew they were in the right places

From feet to jaws, knees to hips

Falls to bumps, from trips to slips

Now Dan, Now Liv, Now Brad and Ash

On Kate, On Jennifer, On Nicole and staff

So off to work they all flew

With Sheryl, Krista and Mary Lou too

As they sprang to their places to the team gave a
shout

Come to Therapeutic Services and let us help you out!

Happy New Year from all the Staff at Therapeutic
Services
